An online reading. Within 24 hours. I have played this game every day for forty years. It has accompanied every decision I have made — small ones, large ones, the ones I thought I had already decided. You hold a question. You write sixteen words. You pair them, two by two, until eight remain. Then four. Then two. Then one. The final word is rarely the one you would have guessed. That is the point. How to play: 1. Find a quiet half hour. Pen and paper, not a screen. 2. Hold a question — something real, not a yes/no. A what, a how, a where. 3. Write the numbers 1 to 16 down the side of the page. This way you don't have to count as you go. 4. Write a word next to each number, without thinking. Anything that arrives: common words, names, places, numbers, made-up words, words in another language. 5. From 16 to 8: read each pair together and let a third word arrive — a word that surfaces, not one you choose. Words can repeat. This stage is listening, not thinking. 6. From 8 to 4: read each pair and think. What word genuinely connects them? Choose deliberately. These four are your theme, challenge, solution, outcome — not necessarily in that order. 7. From 4 to 2: pair them, choose one word for each pair. 8. From 2 to 1: a final word, holding the whole. What you receive: A voice note response within 24 hours.
